Acoma Pottery

Acoma potter, Joyce Leno hand crafted this lovely wedding vase using traditional techniques of hand coiling and outdoor kiln firing. The wedding vase is an ancient vessel still used in traditional Native American wedding ceremonies. One spout of the vessel represents the husband, and the other represents the wife. The looped handle represents the unity achieved with marriage. The space created within the loop represents the couples’ own circle of life. A unique addition is any pottery or Native American art collection. Signed 5 11/16” tall x 3 3/4″ long x 3 1/2″ wide Acoma is a Keresan-speaking Pueblo that has been occupied fr
om at least A.D 1200, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. Called the Sky City, it is built atop a beautiful mesa. Acoma is especially known for its centuries-old tradition of making fine-walled polychrome pottery featuring colorful geometric patterns. Pottery remains an important part of the culture and economy of Acoma today with many artists creating high quality, collectible pots using traditional techniques.
