Native American Art – 100% Authentic Jemez Pueblo Pottery – Traditional Jemez pottery Red Clay Wedding Vase. Handmade and hand painted by Jemez Pueblo potter Mary Small. A Wedding Vase is a vessel still used in traditional Pueblo wedding ceremonies. One spout of the vessel represents the husband and the other the wife. The looped handle represents the unity achieved with marriage. The space created within the loop represents the circle of life. In a traditional ceremony the couple drink from the spouts to represent the blending of their lives. Mary Small is an award winning Jemez Pueblo Potter. She hand coils and paints each pot. After experimenting with natural paints, Mary came up with her unique blue/gray slip and burnt red/orange designs. Artist: Mary Small Size: 4 1/2\

The wedding vase has been part of Navajo & Pueblo life for centuries. The two spouts represent the separate lives of the bride and groom, which are united by the bridge at the top. The groom’s parents provide the wedding vase for use in the ceremony. On the day of the wedding, the vase is filled with holy water and given to the bride. She drinks from one side and the groom drinks from the other. This ceremony is equivalent to the exchanging of wedding bands. The wedding vases make wonderful wedding and anniversary gifts. Ceremonial pottery is considered sacred and is only made and given as gifts among tribal members. The pottery must be fired in a certain way to be hardened against water permeation, or otherwise sealed using pine pitch or wax. This is an unsigned piece very much in the style of renowned Santa Clara Pueblo. The clay, slip glaze colors and symbols are all consistent with Santa Clara work, however this piece is unsigned so it it hard to authenticate. Unmarked pieces were often meant for friends and family and not the open market. The red clay is finely burnished to a bright lustre. Slip glazed designs of geometric symbols and flying birds adorn this graceful piece. In very good condition. No chips or cracks. Slight rubbing to slip glaze designs on one side. This ceremonial vase would make a striking wedding or anniversary present or would be a very romantic gift as part of a marriage proposal. 6.5 inches tall and 6 inches wide.
